What our rankings are based on
- Your water first. Every recommendation starts from the contaminant, not the product. We match systems to what a water test actually shows.
- Manufacturer-published specs for flow rate, capacity, and what each system removes.
- Third-party standards — NSF/ANSI 42, 44, 53, and 58, plus EPA limits — as the yardstick for what "removes" means.
- Real ownership cost — salt, cartridges, wastewater, and maintenance cadence — weighted over sticker price.
- Documented user reports from owners running these systems on real wells.
How the PureHouse Score works
Every product we badge on a best-list carries a score out of 10. It answers one question: how strong is this recommendation? A product is on the page because we would suggest it to someone, so the score says how emphatic we are about it, and the sub-scores show you where the catch is.
It is a weighted average of four sub-scores, the same four for every product on this site:

We do not badge anything below 7.5. A product that cannot clear it gets cut from the picks, or handled in the prose where we can explain the problem properly. That is why our scores sit high and close together: the picks are all systems we would recommend to the right person. The separation lives in the sub-scores. A certified softener with a three-year board warranty and an uncertified one with a lifetime warranty can land a few tenths apart and still suit different households.
Every sub-score is our assessment, reached from published specifications, certification listings, warranty documents and owner reports. Each one carries a sentence saying what earned it, with a link to the document behind it where one exists — open “Why it scores…” under any pick to read all four.
What they are not based on (yet)
We do not currently run these systems in our own lab. When we say a system removes iron or softens water, that reflects manufacturer specs and certification standards — not first-hand testing we performed. When that changes, we'll say so on the page and show the data.
How we handle affiliate links
